Law enforcement in Sacramento are examining a gun violence incident that unfolded on April 18 2026 at the Howe Community Park area while Sacramento County Sheriff's deputies were dispersing an unsanctioned gathering of several hundred people.
Before the Gunfire
Officers from the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office were first called to the park on Howe Avenue at approximately 6:30 PM on April 18 after being notified of people potentially armed with concealed firearms. Following that, a second call came in concerning a possible fight unfolding near the park.
Air support was sent to survey the area but reported no active disturbance. Regardless, it became clear that several hundred individuals had assembled at the park in an unauthorized manner.
How the Shooting Unfolded
Responding units set about removing people from the park by surrounding the park and broadcasting over loudspeakers instructing the crowd to disperse at once. Nearly 15 minutes were allowed for people to comply.
As the crowd was being cleared that an estimated 20 to 25 shots cut through the air. The rapid succession of shots sent the crowd running in all directions. Sacramento County Sheriff's deputies immediately began searching for victims.
Four Gunshot Victims
By the time the scene was secured, four gunshot victims were identified as having gunshot wounds. Those injured — comprising three men and one woman each apparently in their twenties — were airlifted or driven to local Sacramento hospitals. Medical personnel stated that two had critical injury classifications, one person had injuries of a moderate nature, and one sustained minor gunshot wounds. As of last report, each of the four victims was stable.
Sacramento Metro Fire provided support and aided in treating the four victims at the scene.
Physical Evidence
The main crime scene seemed to have taken place along Cottage Way near the Home Depot situated at the 2200 block of Howe Ave. Crime scene investigators located further ballistic evidence in the form of shell casings scattered along Cottage Way. Ballistic damage were identified in the wrought iron fence adjacent to the nearby Home Depot. The physical evidence indicated that at least one shooter had been aiming south from the Cottage Way area toward the Home Depot building and parking lot. The store itself was put under lockdown for a period of time. Crime scene personnel remained on scene well into the night.
